The conversion that costs you quality permanently
One conversion is misunderstood often enough to be worth its own section.
Converting JPG to PNG does not improve the image. PNG is lossless, so it preserves exactly what you give it. But the quality was already discarded when the file became a JPG, and that information is gone. You end up with a lossless copy of a lossy image, and a much larger file for no benefit.
If you need a high quality PNG, go back to the original source file rather than converting a JPG.
The other direction has a catch too
PNG to JPG discards transparency. JPG cannot store a transparent background, so it fills it in, usually with white. If you convert a logo with a transparent background to JPG and place it on a coloured page, you get a white box around it.
When do you actually need to convert?
- The upload form rejects your format. Common with WebP on older systems, and occasionally with PNG on size-restricted forms.
- The file is too large. Converting a PNG photograph to JPG or WebP can cut the size dramatically with little visible change.
- You need transparency. Convert to PNG or WebP, but only from a source that actually has a transparent background.
